reating art has always been a
part of my life along with raising a
family and having a career. However
it became a serious focus when I
retired in 2006. Now living in West
Kelowna, I spend most days painting
landscapes that usually include
Okanagan Lake and vineyards. The
Okanagan Valley is a never-ending
source of subject matter. I can walk across the road from my house to some spectacular views.
Acrylics are my favorite medium and I start out my landscape paintings with a vivid wash of magenta.
Never far away from experimentation, I often explore different processes using charcoal and pastels with acrylic mediums.
This has led to producing a nostalgia series from the 1930’s and 40’s using old family photos as inspiration.
I am an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Central Okanagan Chapter and I paint on a weekly basis with the Brushstrokes Club of West Kelowna.
I’ve subscribed to The Artist’s Journal for several years. It is an incredible resource for every art event in the province of BC.

Subscriber profile: J.A. Tan
am an artist with autism. I moved from the Philippines twelve years ago and attended Emily Carr University of Arts and Design,
where I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2010.
Since then I’ve been working as a visual artist in Vancouver, mounting solo shows and doing group shows in Vancouver, Canada; in the U.S. particularly California, New York and Miami; London, U.K.; Beijing, China, and Manila, Philippines. I have also been commissioned to create works for offices and residences in Vancouver and Manila.
A high point in my young career was having one of my paintings chosen from among 200+ submissions, issued as a United Nation’s stamp in April 2012. I even traveled to the United Nations in New York for the release of the stamp and met then-Secretary General
Ban Ki-Moon! I have also collaborated with a fashion designer, creating wearable art for a fashion show in New York and an author providing
illustrations for a book published in 2017.
Art is a way for me to express my
thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Coping with everyday life as an artist challenged with autism,
I strive to make a difference in the world.
Through my paintings, drawings and
mixed media artworks, I am able to not only communicate my innermost thoughts and
feelings but also create images that hopefully inspire others.
When not painting at my studio on
Granville Island, I practice tae kwon do and enjoy getting together with friends. Much of my inspiration comes from things around me and
my travels around the world.
I am currently accepting art commissions. Visit my website at www.artofjatan.com and
follow me on facebook.com/artofjatan and Instagram com/artofjatan You can also email
me at firstname.lastname@example.org
I have been a subscriber to The Artist’s Journal for a while now and do appreciate the listings and calls for entry.

THE FORT GALLERY (9048 Glover Road, Fort Langley) invites artists to participate in their 2019 juried exhibition, Imprint. Print, as printed text or printed image, can become the starting place for any visual art medium. Artists are encouraged to explore the possibilities of print as muse, while also considering the consequences of print. The process of imprinting is everywhere; everything we touch and every place we go, we leave a trace of ourselves; everything we do leaves a mark, a consequence. The conceptual possibilities of printmaking are thus endless. The exhibition dates are April 3-28, 2019. Entry deadline March 20. Contemporary modes of artistic expression are encouraged. To apply: Complete the online artist submission form at and pay the jury fee of one fee payment per artist: $30 ($20 for Fort Gallery Society Members). Send a separate email to email@example.com with digital (jpeg, jpg) images of up to 3 pieces of original 2D or 3D artwork.
