VERNON

Vernon Public Art Gallery (3228 31 Ave) presents Beairsto Anti-Racist Project, by the students at Beairsto School, showing until Oct 19, 2021. As a peaceful protest against the racist propaganda which was distributed around schools in the community in the fall of 2020, École Beairsto and the Vernon Public Art Gallery present a collaborative social justice project as a way to speak up against hate. In the fall of 2020, hundreds of flyers on pieces of white paper with the headline ‘Wake Up’ along with a list of several web pages that promote racism and Nazism, were found scattered outside several Vernon schools, leaving many parents and staff seriously concerned, shocked and saddened. The 715 self-portraits will form a rainbow mosaic of diversity that highlights the differences that make each one of us special. The project will not only feature 715 canvases with a self-portrait of each student; but also an anti-racist banner that will be hung outside the school; and a special mini-documentary. The workshop portion and the mini-documentary portions of the project are sponsored by the Social Planning Council North Okanagan and funded by a provincial government grant through the Resilience BC program.

Some paint comes across directly onto the nervous system and other paint tells you the story in a long diatribe through the brain.

       ~ Francis Bacon

1. What prompted Pablo Picasso's famous Blue Period?

2. Name the artist sentenced to death by the Pope after killing a man.

3. What artist sold a portrait of Leonardo DiCaprio for over $1 million?

4. What is the title of Leonardo da Vinci's portrait of Christ?

ANSWERS: 1. between 1901 and 1904, Picasso painted essentially monochromatic paintings in shades of mostly blue and blue-green. According to the artist himself, this period was an artistic response to his depression over the death of Carlos Casagemas, a friend who shot himself. 2. In 1606, Caravaggio killed (probably unintentionally) a young man named Ranuccio Tomassoni. The circumstances of their fight was thought to be a quarrel over a gambling debt and a tennis game.

3. Elizabeth Peyton's portait, entitled Leonardo, sold at Christie's New York in 2013. 4. Salvator Mundi (Savior of the World) was painted between 1506 and 1513.

I have no fear of making changes, destroying the

image, etc., because the painting has a life

of its own.
