Growing up cruising and exploring British Columbia’s beautiful and rugged coastline, skiing and investigating its lush mountains and forests, all resulted in Catherine’s profound love and respect for the wilderness, habitats and the creatures that call these places their home. As a result, the major themes of Catherine’s paintings describe these areas in all their seasonal changes, most often, however, while they are covered in snow, something dear to the heart of this one-time explorer.

Catherine is self-taught with the exception of a few workshops from well-respected artists. She has been a full-time, practising artist for over 35 years and paints in the acrylic medium. Many of her drawings are of local birds, preferring the Prismacolour coloured pencil and ink media for these.

She was invited into membership by the Mondial Art Academia in southern France and was later offered their prestigious Artiste de Mois Award in 2020. Catherine received her Signature Status with the Federation of Canadian Artists in the same year and has won many awards for her work. Her work is recognized for its unique style, brilliant colour associations, along with excellent drawing skills.

Catherine has finished commissions for Hollywood North and one

of her pieces is contracted to the well-known Rogers Chocolates Ltd.

on Vancouver Island.

She lives and works in White Rock, B.C.

As a young child, I spent countless hours wandering in the forest. It was a different time and this freedom yielded a sacred relationship with trees, light-flooded forest oases, richly delineated underbrush, and speckled umbrellas of leaves.

As an adult, I rediscovered these mysteries in the mid-island streams, rivers, and forests of the Pacific Rim: Qualicum Beach, Ucluelet, and Tofino, British Columbia. There is much silence yet these areas pulse with life. Golden light threads through tree domes and the air are heavy with ocean spray and oxygen. One can sleep and dream here. This is why I paint the forests of Vancouver Island.

In addition, I am blessed with three granddaughters who are an endless source of inspiration. My easel is always busy.

My education is deep: Bachelor’s, S.F.U., Master’s, U.B.C. and many courses from Emily Carr Art Institute. Work experience includes 35 years of teaching, culminating in teaching Art 8-12 and Advanced Placement Studio Art. In addition,

I have given many workshops in drawing, painting, and the principles and elements of design.

I have participated in numerous shows through the Federation of Canadian Artists and I have been featured in Arts Avenue Magazine various times. Current shows include an exhibition at The Old School House in Qualicum Beach, Nanaimo and

Arrowsmith F.C.A., Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen, and a sold-out solo show in Tianjin, China.

The Caetani Cultural Centre Society presents its new permanent exhibit, Sveva Caetani’s iconic life work, Recapitulation. The series, which includes more than 50 unique watercolour paintings documenting Caetani’s life story and outlook on life, has been under the care of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) in Edmonton for close to 35 years. The AFA shipped the paintings to the late artist's childhood home in Vernon, which now serves as the Caetani Cultural Centre, on March 19. The intention is that they will now be displayed in the community that Caetani loved. This summer, the Caetani Centre is offering tours of Sveva’s artwork along with Caetani family artifacts and memorabilia for the first time since the house was donated to the Greater Vernon community in 1994. Sveva’s story has already been the inspiration for many books and films, and the Caetani Centre expects to be busy once its doors officially open this summer. COVID-19 guidelines and protocols will be in effect. Tours are expected to begin by July and will be limited to small groups and/or bubbles following public health guidelines. To book a tour online, visit or call the Caetani Centre office at 250-275-1525.

Please submit your news

I am very grateful to those who regularly submit news. It is impossible for me to search every arts organization's website for news! I appreciate the many who voluntarily send me their Calls and Shows, which are free to publish. NOTE: However, lessons and workshops are considered paid advertising, but if you submit a Call or an Art Show, you can briefly mention your lesson or workshop,

at the end of your news item.

Those not who do not regularly  contact me with their news, please consider including The Artist’s Journal on your “media mailing list.” If this is not possible, let me include your e-mail in my news source list: you will receive a deadline reminder notice just before each issue, allowing you to submit your news on time for publication.
