arly on, Birgit learned to closely examine the world

around her to interpret and ultimately express her version of its uniqueness, resulting in paintings with a distinct sense that more of the story lurks just behind the canvas.

Fascination with light and dark as well as architectural elements is evident in her subjects. A spiritual thread runs through her work.

Clearly, her life’s experience is a great teacher and is her inspiration. To further her technical skills, she has studied with the Vancouver Art Academy, and has been tutored by artists of note.

Birgit is privileged to be coached by world renowned artist, Donna Zhang who has been the catalyst in a significant shift in the style and quality of her work. Donna has helped develop Birgit’s unique style without compromising her innate regard for the “old masters”. Birgit is an accomplished and multiple award-winning artist having earned the Signature Status with the Federation of Canadian Artists. Her work is technically sound, exceptional, and timeless.

Presently, she is happily ensconced in the prolific art community of central Vancouver Island, enjoying the natural and inspirational beauty of the Pacific Northwest in Canada.

Janine_PROFILE for newsletter.jpg

anine Fijal was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 2012, after retiring from

teaching at the University of Manitoba, she moved with her husband to White Rock, B.C. Her love of art began at an early age after being introduced to drawing and painting by two of her aunts who were portrait artists. They taught Janine the basics of charcoal sketching and oil painting. Their passion for the arts and their encouragement inspired her.

After moving to White Rock, Janine had the opportunity to take art lessons from Canadian artist Chris MacClure, a Romantic Realist Fine Art Painter. Here she learned about brush patterns, styles, and colour theory, as well as techniques for landscape painting.

Janine is an active member of the South

Surrey White Rock Art Society (SSWRAS)

and served on the board of directors from

2016-2019. She appreciates the connection

to other member artists who share their

experiences. She has taken advantage of

the painting workshops as well as attending

the monthly demos by professional artists.

Janine enjoys painting abstracts and vibrantly

coloured street scenes and cityscapes.

Acrylic is her preferred medium. In addition

to doing commission work, her art has been

displayed and sold at the SSWRAS annual

Spring and Fall Art Shows.
